I’ve had a tough last few days and it came through in my pilates class this afternoon. I wasn’t really ‘there’ or fully present in the exercise. I retreated into my own head and wasn’t using my breath or mind-body connection. I didn’t give it my best and was just going through the motions. I understand that this does happen from time to time – especially after hard days – but I felt that I let my instructor down and I let myself down when I didn’t leave my problems at the door and give the class my physical best.

One of the most valuable things I have learned through practicing pilates and yoga is that I can ‘think myself better’ by fully focusing on the physical exercise. Each practice forces you to be mindful of your body; in order to do the work fully and correctly, you have to engage with it mentally. You can’t – as I did today – just ‘go through the motions’ with little awareness, intent, or drive. You achieve better results – and feel better – when you use your mind and body together.
